qathet Regional District
Working together to create an accessible government website for the local community.
Location
Powell River, BC

The qathet Regional District (qRD) is a local government situated in the traditional territory of the Tla’amin, shíshálh, Klahoose and K’ómoks First Nations (formerly known as Powell River Regional District.) To distinguish itself from the City of Powell River, the district changed its name to qathet in 2018. The name was gifted to the Regional District by Tla’amin Nation Elders and means “working together.” With its new name, qRD was ready for a new website that was more accessible and functional for the community and local government workers. Our team of web designers and web developers partnered with them to help achieve their web development goals.

What did we do?
Custom Illustration & Iconography
Website Design & Programming
How Did We Help Them Out?
  • Using the existing logo, our graphic designers created customized icons and button styles to clearly communicate information and make call-to-actions clear. The web design is styled with three navigations to reduce overwhelm and allow users to access relevant information quickly.
  • Our web developers programmed a custom search bar that seamlessly searches municipal documents via API through a third-party system, iCompass. We added customized forms, and put together an events calendar that is easily editable through the content management system in the backend of the site.
  • WordPress access was set up with customized user roles, specifying pages that qathet staff can and can not edit depending on their department. Additional publishing tools such as a broken links checker were added to give the team full control over maintaining their large site.
Website development is responsive on both desktop and mobile to maintain accessibility no matter the screen size.
