Cowichan Valley, BC
Cowichan Adapts is Cowichan Valley Regional District’s (CVRD) climate adaptation strategy, designed to help the community respond to the growing impacts of climate change. Focused on education and action, this initiative provides local solutions to challenges like hotter summers, wetter winters, and severe storms. To better connect with the public and provide accessible resources, Cowichan Adapts needed a modern, user-friendly website to replace its outdated platform. Having previously partnered with the CVRD to create the Emergency Management Cowichan website, we were excited to take on this new challenge. Our team worked to design a refreshed, accessible website that serves as a vital resource and learning hub for the community. Here’s how we brought their vision to life.

Website Design & Programming
- Building on the Cowichan Adapts brand, our designers began by creating a web style guide with a secondary colour palette and accessible font and colour pairings. This ensured a cohesive look across the entire website while aligning with other CVRD platforms.
- Guided by the CVRD’s mission, our web design team crafted a website that not only delivers real-time updates and urgent notices for the Cowichan Valley but also serves as an engaging and interactive learning portal for the community. The website uses a dashboard style layout and colour blocking to keep the information organized and easy to read.
- Our team designed a custom “Current Conditions” banner that visually communicates drought levels, and water and fire restrictions in the area. This feature is prominently displayed on the home page, and remains accessible throughout the site as a collapsible element, along with a banner for notices, ensuring users can easily stay informed.
- To keep the educational content engaging and easy to find, we divided it into two main sections: Learning and Taking Action. Each section features four key topics, starting with an overview to introduce the content. From there, users can navigate to detailed sub-sections for deeper exploration.
- Interactive maps and charts were custom programmed to visually communicate data regarding water levels, systems, and usage reports. These maps and charts autopopulate with the data provided by Cowichan Adapts, streamlining the process of updating the visuals every time there are new reports.
- We developed a filterable resource library to provide the community with easy access to detailed information on climate change, drought, and flooding, both within the Cowichan region and beyond.
- The icons and custom-designed graphic elements add a playful touch throughout the site and contribute to its engaging user experience.
